IELTS Writing Task 2

There has been a dramatic growth in the number of people studying at universities in the last few decades. While some people see this as a positive trend which raises the general level of education within the community, others fear that it is lowering the quality of education. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the increase in student numbers at university? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write the topic about 250-300 words for 40 minutes.

Over the last few decades, the number of people attending university has dramatically increased, bringing both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, the rise in enrollment could be a positive trend that raises the community’s level of education since a larger student body leads to more diversity on campus and helps boost research. However, downsides that could be considered such as overcrowding classes, strained resources, and higher competition for jobs post-graduation.

One major advantage of rising enrollment is that it raises the overall education level in society. As more people earn degrees, communities benefit as a whole from more knowledgeable and skilled people. Another benefit of a larger student body is more diversity on campus, where students from different countries and backgrounds have opportunities to share ideas and learn from each other. Additionally, having more students helps boost research since with a larger group contributing to projects, universities would be more active and effective in discovering new technologies or solutions to global issues. For instance, many medical discoveries come from large research universities with a high rate of student participation.

However, this growing enrollment also brings challenges like overcrowding classes and strained resources. Large class sizes can make it harder for professors to give attention to individual students, and libraries or labs may not have enough space and materials for everyone. This might make students feel less supported, which affects their learning. Another concern is the increased competition for jobs as more students graduate could lead to a saturated job market. This makes it difficult for students to find jobs in their field, even after spending years of hard work and studying.

In conclusion, the increase in university enrollment has both benefits and drawbacks. While it raises education levels, promotes diversity, and enhances research, it can also strain resources and create challenges in the job market. Careful planning and decisions are needed to ensure that universities can handle a rapidly growing student population without risking education quality.
