The graph illustrates the number of 13-year-old students who chose to study either Mandarin or French from 2000 until today in a school in England.
Overall, the trend for the French language seems to be higher and more popular among the students. In 2000, while the number of students who took French was approximately 150, Mandarin had only less than 10 learners. However, French learners began to decrease gradually from 2001 to around 90 students and then rose back in 2006 with 100. After that, with just a slight drop in the next year and 2009, it remained stable until now at about 90 students.
On the other hand, the Mandarin trend is upward compared to French. It started with just less than 10 students at the start but climbed up significantly over the years to reach more than 70 students in 2005. Although the number of students somewhat declined in 2006, it remained fairly steady to the present.
In general, although French has continued to be more popular among the students throughout the period, but the number of Mandarin learners rose steadily and became much closer to French at the end.
